Bye-Bye HD DVD, Hello Blu-Ray

blu-ray-logoNot one year after spending almost $500 on a Toshiba HD DVD player, I learn that Toshiba has surrendered in the HD DVD/Blu-Ray war. As a result, Blu-Ray is the winner. Now what? Should I run out and buy a Blu-Ray player?

My answer? No. Though the movie studios will no longer be producing HD DVDs, my Toshiba does an excellent job of converting my regular DVDs into near-HD quality. Often, I can’t tell the difference between an HD DVD and one that has been converted. Also, my cable provider offers a number of HD movies on demand. Why even bother with a player when I can simply click a button and watch a high-definition movie directly off of my high-definition television.

Blu-Ray might have won this battle, but it still hasn’t won me over.

Your thoughts?

Should You Say “I Do” to the iPhone?

April 7th, 2009 0 Comments

iphone-crowdMost of you have probably seen the iPhone. Invented by Apple, the iPhone is part cell phone, part Internet browser, part iPod, part anything else you could possibly need.

My fiance has an iPhone. I must say, it’s pretty cool and very user-friendly. However, If I buy an iPhone, I make many of the gadgets that I already own (many of which I just recently purchased) useless. Why use my video iPod when I can listen to music and watch videos on my iPhone? Why check my e-mail and browse the Internet with my BlackBerry when I can do both on my iPhone?

By investing several hundred dollars in an iPhone, I’m basically throwing hundreds of dollars worth of other useful tools out the window. In the end, my bank account is the one that looses.

I’d love to hear what others think.
